This blog reminds me my experience. Even I started my business as virtual assistant. now its being my 5th year

Today's students have certainly changed in a big way. As one of these students, I absolutely agree that too make teachers are "speaking analog." That said, there are also a huge number of teachers who THINK they are "speaking digital," but are failing to use technology in a way that enhances learning. NCVPS is a great example. VPS courses never enhanced my learning. In fact, I never learned anything from them! They're poorly designed and difficult to navigate. In addition, many teachers are using tools that do not enhance learning in any discernable way - like Voki. There is still a ton of room for improvement.

Excellent synopsis! Even at the higher education level, we face this “expectation” of engagement in students. The old way is just not enough. As the professors grow younger, my hope is we will see this demand coming from instruction not necessarily from students. After one session with Dr. Setser on-line, I was exhausted. I felt like I had used all of my senses. I did not get bored or feel like I missed anything. It was exhilarating. So if he instills this in his program, it will be very successful. Students will clamor to take the courses. As a parent of two, I moved my children to private school for the opportunities to take higher level courses and have more selection. Virtual courses seem to address this issue. You go Dr. Setser. I look forward to seeing these students as they progress to higher education.

Credit recovery and versatility currently outweigh even the availability feature for Rocky Mt. Prep. Due to the popularity of credit recovery over the summer, some students have opted to recover their credit during the fall. Versatile options opened several doors for the fall, with the addition of full inclusion for the OCS students who will take Distance Learning courses alongside college prep distance learners; five different periods afford greater access for more students, while the main period still teems with a full class of distance learners. Rocky Mount Prep is looking to take greater advantage of NCVPS through 2011 and beyond!

It's just not fair to students when one LEA decides to sit on information about NCVPS/LEO and refuse to participate; these LEAs seem invariable to be the rural, wherein the greatest benefits are to be gained. Many high-school students I run into from other schools have never heard of NCVPS or LEO.

I'm afraid that nothing short of an SBE-directive to participate will ensure that all students have the opportunity to benefit from our state's leaps forward.

I love the reward system. I am looking to add more CR next year this has been very helpful in giving me ideas of encouraging my students.

There is a difference between "fast and easy" and "timely and supported". Timely and supported is what NCVPS credit recovery provides for students. North Carolina students need timely instruction, or to meet the needs that they have currently. These needs can be met through the flexibility of NCVPS CR. CR at NCVPS becomes the timely option that is standards and pedagogically sound.
I would rather see a student that is supported in a "timely" manner rather than just "fast!"

I applaud the cloud advocacy - we should chat about some of the advice though. I might suggest that the final piece of advice should be the first (only?) advice - specifically, find some technical experience and advice (from a non-vendor/provider).

Last time I was a state board of ed meeting with Dr. Setser, I had the privilege of meeting Neil Kimrey, head of tech for the state. I wasn't telling him anything new when I mentioned that that openoffice.org could save districts across the state tons of cash -he said he'd been pushing it for years! Education leaders have to not only understand that there's an 'open world' out there, but they have to understand that they're obligated to learn about it and take advantage of it, because they're obligated to be responsible with taxpayer dollars. Let's open our eyes and take advantage of what's available!

I had the opportunity to hear your teachers, central office staff, and students present at the NCASCD Conference in Pinehurst. I was impressed with the technology integration in your district and the way the presenters modeled multiple ways that technology and free online tools can be used to support teaching and learning. I am impressed with the way you model ways to use technology through your blog and through the way you opened the NCASCD session from a remote location (outside Pinehurst). I look forward to speaking with Derek and seeking opportunities to continue learning about technology integration in Montgomery County Schools. Thank you to you and your staff for sharing your innovative ideas and for making staff development an ongoing process, rather than sit-and-get. I believe we will have to put action plans in place to encourage teachers trying the technology. We need them to play with it long enough to become proficient at it and have it become a part of their regular practice. We as administrators also need to model, model, model, and encourage!
